Obituary Mr. Joe Louis Gordon was the first child born to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gordon, Jr. Joe was born on July 24, 1934, in Red River County, Texas. At an early age, Joe attended the Hopewell Baptist Church with his family and he attended elementary school there as well. Joe later graduated from Cheatham High School. He attended Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. He also attended Draughn’s Business College. Following his college matriculation, Joe was drafted into the U.S. Army in a military career where he served his country well.
Joe united with St. Matthew Baptist Church under the pastorship of the late Reverend L. W. Washington. At St. Matthew Church, Joe kept the records for the church and served his church in other capacities too numerous to tell. He was a faithful, loyal, and most dependable member in the St. Matthew Baptist Church for many years until his health began to fail.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Lillie Mae Gordon, his brother --David Lee Gordon and his nephew--Dion Kevin Sanders. He leaves to mourn his passing two sisters—Sallie Marie Sanders (Herman) of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Charli Lois Oquin (widow of Tommy Oquin) of Dallas, Texas. Further, he leaves to mourn his sister-in-law—Georgia Gordon, two nieces--Michaelle Oquin Norman and Degie Parrish-White of Dallas, Texas, three great-nieces—Erin Oquin Ferguson (Marcus), Shanice Oquin Glasco (Stan), and Anya Lenje Gordon, four nephews—Greg Oquin of Dallas, Texas , Darin Sanders, Jelani Gordon of Wichita Falls, Texas and Jabari Gordon of Denver, Colorado; and four great-nephews Stanley Glasco, Neiman Oquin, Patrick Parrish, Jr., of Dallas, Texas and Jared Parks of New York, along with a host of other relatives and friends.

Dear Gordon Family, It is with a heavy heart that I write to you upon learning of the passing of Brother Joe Gordon. While I may not have been a member of the St. Matthews Baptist Church community, my time as the Minister of Music there afforded me the privilege of knowing Brother Joe, both as a strong tenor in the choir and a dedicated member of the finance department. Brother Joe's voice was not just a musical gift; it was an embodiment of his spirit - strong, uplifting, and deeply resonant with faith. His contributions to the choir were immeasurable, and his presence brought a sense of harmony and joy that transcended the notes we sang. Beyond his musical and financial stewardship, Brother Joe was a person of immense warmth and friendliness. His ability to connect with people, to share a kind word or a smile, made a significant impact on our church community. He was the kind of person whose presence could light up a room and whose kindness left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him. In these moments of loss, it is often difficult to find the right words, but I find solace in celebrating the life Brother Joe lived and the many ways he enriched our lives. His legacy at St. Matthews Baptist Church and within our hearts will endure. Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. May you find comfort in knowing that Brother Joe's life was a blessing to all who knew him, and his memory will forever be cherished. With heartfelt sympathy, Jason Erby
